His name originates from the comic book Blek le Roc, using "rat" as an anagram for "art". He described the rat as "the only free animal in the city", and one which "spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art". Prou began his artwork in 1981, painting stencils of rats on the walls of Paris streets. Xavier Prou was born in Boulogne-Billancourt in the western suburbs of Paris. Notable compositions by Xavier Prou include Madonna with Child (Leipzig, 1991), and the Escaping Paris collection of lithographs (New York, 2014).Blek le Rat (born Xavier Prou, 1952) was one of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and has been described as the "Father of stencil graffiti". Prou's work typically depicts images of pop-culture or historical figures (sometimes including himself) in incongruous or surreal settings, painted in lively, vivid and eye-catching colors. Prou's painting can be characterized as 'guerilla-art' - emphasizing its unorthodox and underground nature, and he has worked with a variety of mediums throughout his career - such as spray-paint and stencils, canvas painting, photographs, and lithography. Notable compositions by Xavier Prou include Madonna with Child (Leipzig, 1991), and the Escaping Paris collection of lithographs (New York, 2014).
